COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Yesterday, the Greater Rockford Chamber of Commerce honored 40 local leaders under 40 at a reception in Rockford. The awards recognized honorees such as WIFR’s Maggie Polsean—highlighting their positive impact in areas like business, education, and public service.  WIFR
  • The Village of Machesney Park President and Board of Trustees met Sept.15 to review an agenda that included approving past minutes, financial and administrative reports, and proposed ordinances and resolutions — such as zoning amendments and property changes. The meeting addressed key issues affecting community services and local development.  Rockford Sun
  • Mayor Tom McNamara and local pantry leaders kicked off the annual fundraising campaign on Tuesday, Sept 16 at Rock River Valley Pantry—aiming to raise over $50,000 for nine local pantries, while UW Health Northern Illinois is providing a $5,000 matching donation on contributions until Oct 6; the luncheon will be held at Veterans Memorial Hall on Oct 29.  Rock River Current
  • Rockford City Market will launch the Rockford Chili Bowl on Oct. 18 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the City Market Pavilion—local restaurants, chefs and community members will serve various chili styles, football and family fun while a portion of the proceeds benefits Carpenter’s Place to support the homeless.  Rockford Register Star

BUSINESS NEWS

  • The owners of Doc’s Diner turned to public fundraising to help cover $30,000 in repairs after a roof fire on August 20 while the ventilation was being serviced—GoFundMe organizer Lisa Trickie said the fundraiser seeks to raise $6,000 to help Ron and Mary reopen the restaurant once repairs and cleaning are complete.  WTVO

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Rockford Area Arts Council will update the Region Cultural Plan on September 18 from 6 to 8:30 p.m. at City Stage Studios, 821 1st Avenue—community leaders will share new pillars for inclusivity, neighborhood development, youth education and advocacy—attendees can enjoy a cash bar and heavy hors d’oeuvres with free entry.  WIFR
  • Anderson Japanese Gardens at 318 Spring Creek Road was recognized by HGTV as the most beautiful garden in Illinois—its 12-acre site features koi ponds, waterfalls, and a 16th century Sukiya-style guest house and welcomes visitors with seasonal hours.  Rock River Current

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Rockford University will host a workshop titled 'Prototyping Plural Pathways Towards Peace' led by Dr. Danielle Lake on Monday, September 22 at 9:00 a.m. in Fisher Chapel — media must RSVP by September 18.  Rockford University

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Rockford will use a $500K federal grant from the EPA to assess 25 brownfield sites and develop cleanup plans that aim to reduce health risks and promote new investments—community meetings will shape the planning process.  WIFR

  • The Rockford Police Department is accepting applications for entry-level officers until October 31 with a starting pay of $70,958 — comprehensive benefits and career training. Applicants can build a future in community safety through specialized certification and promotion opportunities.  WTVO
