COMMUNITY NEWS

  • After ICE agents were spotted in Rockford, local leaders including Antonio Ramirez canceled Hispanic-led events such as Fiestas Patrias due to safety concerns amid warnings from undocumented residents—Rockford Urban Ministries will host a support meeting at Aldersgate United Methodist Church on Sunday. This action reflects community efforts to ensure safety during uncertain times.  WTVO

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Rockford Airport earned the Primary Airport of the Year award from IDOT for record-breaking growth in both passengers and cargo—highlighting its dedication to safety and improved service across domestic and international routes. EDUCATION NEWS

  • Rockford School District 205 had the highest count of Pacific Islander students in Winnebago County with 24 enrolled in the 2023-24 school year—an increase of 4.3% over last year and representing 0.1% of the county's enrollment. The data came from the Illinois State Board of Education.  Rockford Sun

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Judge Brendan Maher, who currently leads the Criminal Division, will become chief judge of the 17th Judicial Circuit on Jan. 1—overseeing Boone and Winnebago Counties. He has served on the bench since 2010 and worked in private practice as well as an assistant U.S. attorney.  Rockford Register Star
  • Firefighters from the Loves Park Fire Department held a fire safety event on Sunday and warned that small items like batteries and remotes can spark fires if not handled properly—urging residents to keep devices off flammable surfaces. The Rockford Fire Department will hold an open house next Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Station 5 on 391 North Trainer Rd.  WIFR

HEALTH NEWS

  • On Sept. 17, the Winnebago County Health Department recognized Medical Reserve Corps volunteers for improving emergency planning for seniors, assisting with flu vaccinations, and supporting community outreach through reading and historical document scanning. Retired nurse Anne Hammes and others used their skills to build local emergency readiness—earning community acknowledgment.  Rockford Register Star
  • Rockford residents will join the annual Out of the Darkness Walk Sunday — sponsored by the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention — to support mental health and prevent suicide. Ninety-four percent of adults say suicide is preventable and local organizers have raised over $400,000 each year since 2004 to help those affected.  WIFR
