- ➤ Librarians and book lovers in Rockford are planning events for Banned Books Week — Oct. 5 to Oct. 11 — to discuss concerns over banned books and censorship. Panels will be held at Rock Valley College on Oct. 9 and at the Rockford Public Library on Oct. 15 to help the community learn about these issues. WIFR

- ➤ Illinois announced a $50.6 billion plan to upgrade roads, bridges, transit, and infrastructure over six years. The program will spend $25.5 million on local projects in Winnebago—one of many projects planned across the state—to improve highways and create jobs. Rockford Register Star
- ➤ Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker sent a letter on Monday to the National Governors Association asking them to condemn the plan to send 400 Texas National Guard troops to help federal immigration enforcement in Chicago — he warned that Illinois would withdraw from the group if it did not speak out. - ➤ Rockford fire officials stressed the importance of working smoke detectors during the annual Smoke Alarm Blitz—held with the Illinois Fire Safety Alliance—to help prevent home fire deaths. They noted many alarms are dead or expired and urged residents to check them monthly to stay safe. WTVO
- ➤ Fire departments across Winnebago County left Mercyhealth’s Rockcom system and switched to the sheriff’s office’s or Rockford Fire’s 911 center—North Park and Loves Park Fire reported that this change improved response times and lowered costs. WIFR
