- ➤ Shawn Way, a Rockford native who co-founded Rockford Bank & Trust and led nonprofit Milestone Inc., died Friday, Oct. 3 at age 63 after a 2 1/2-year battle with ALS—he was known for his genuine care for the community. Rock River Current
BUSINESS NEWS
- ➤ Village Green Home and Garden owners Carolyn and Cynthia Smith announced that they sold the flagship Riverside location at 6101 E. Riverside Boulevard to Platt Hill Nursery led by Graham and Clark Hill. Village Green will end operations after the holiday season—Platt Hill Nursery will reopen the site in spring. WIFR

- ➤ The Makers on the Move Bus visited Rock Valley College Advanced Technology Center on October 9 to showcase innovation and career opportunities in manufacturing—local leaders spoke while high school students joined hands-on demonstrations in welding, robotics, 3D printing, and truck driver training to highlight workforce development efforts. - ➤ Rock and Roll Institute has partnered with Hard Rock Casino Rockford and will host its winter music camp at Hard Rock Live stage on Jan. 2. The program will give local youth hands-on music education and training in performance, songwriting, audio, lighting, and stage management—preparing them for opportunities in the growing entertainment field. GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ The Village of Huntley dropped out of the planned Rockford-to-Chicago Metra rail service — local officials cited concerns over traffic, parking, ridership and financial commitments. WTVO
- ➤ The Winnebago County Board delayed its re-vote on a zoning variance for a property in the 3800 block of Brookview Road after the initial vote fell one vote short of the 15 needed, postponing the decision for another two weeks—only 18 board members attended the Oct. 9 meeting. The delay comes amid political disputes over a request for an extra driveway access point that required a supermajority for approval. Rockford Register Star
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ Mercyhealth set up a temporary emergency center outside Javon Bea Hospital Riverside as part of its annual drill to prepare the community for severe emergencies. The center features a mass decontamination area and a morgue for testing procedures—ensuring readiness for disasters. WTVO
SPORTS NEWS
- ➤ Morgan Seymour, a Roscoe native and Hononegah High School graduate who has danced since age 3, will energize the United Center tonight as she performs with the Luvabulls during the Bulls' preseason game against the Cavaliers. She earned her spot through a summer audition and commutes from Roscoe for 41 home games while sharpening her versatile dance skills—she looks forward to every performance. Rock River Current
- ➤ The Winnebago County Sheriff has established a temporary No Wake Zone on the Rock River from the Riverside Boulevard to the Jefferson Street bridge from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. on October 12 to support the Head of the Rock Regatta — rowers will travel over 3 miles while spectators can watch between Martin Park and the YMCA of Rock River Valley with vendors and food on the Y campus.
