COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Federal officials said if the government shutdown continues, SNAP benefits for November will not be delivered, leaving residents without a vital food resource. The Rockford Health and Human Services Department has provided a list of food pantries in Boone and Winnebago counties—with residents advised to call ahead to confirm hours and requirements.  Rockford Register Star
  • Jessie, a Rockford resident, won $500k on a $10 Holiday Bucks scratch-off ticket purchased at Walmart on Northridge Drive—she said she will use the money to help her family and others in need. Walmart earned a 1% bonus for selling the winning ticket.  Rockford Register Star
  • Downtown Rockford will host Spook the Blocks on Oct. 25 from noon to 4 p.m. Local businesses (using decorated pumpkins to guide trick-or-treaters) and themed storefronts (showing creative art) will create a fun, safe event for families.  Rockford Register Star

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Rockford-area businesses are reporting early holiday shoppers as customers try to beat rising prices this season. A Bankrate survey shows two out of five shoppers expect higher price tags and some stores have already sold out popular items—owners say early shopping could change holiday spending habits.  WIFR

  • Rockford University will host a launch party and reading of The Rockford Anthology on Monday, October 27 at Howard Colman Library, with light snacks available and mingling starting at 4:30 p.m. The event is free, and the reading begins at 5:00 p.m.  Rockford University

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Rockford University congratulated senior Kaden Finnestad for being named a 2025 Student Laureate of the Lincoln Academy of Illinois on Oct. 18 in Chicago. He earned the recognition—accompanied by a Lincoln medallion and a $1,000 check—for his leadership, service as a resident assistant, and role on the football team.  Rockford University

  • A woman won $500,000 on a $10 Holiday Bucks scratch-off ticket while running errands at a Walmart on Northridge Drive during the holiday season—she confirmed her win with a clerk and called her husband—and said she plans to help community kids with part of her winnings. The Walmart store earned $10,000 for selling the winning ticket.  WIFR

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Rockford’s proposal for a new car wash next to the Auburn Street roundabout was withdrawn on October 21 after local group Save Our North End announced its decision on social media—property owner and city officials did not comment.  WTVO
  • The Auburn and N. Main roundabout in Rockford will close for maintenance starting this Sunday, October 26 until it reopens Monday, October 27 at 6 a.m.—detours will be provided for drivers during the closure.  WTVO

SPORTS NEWS

  • Rockford native Chris Daleo, a coach with over 30 years of global experience, joined Highland Community College’s Cougar Basketball as the new assistant men’s coach. Coach Erik Walton said Daleo’s expertise will help the team prepare for the season opener on Nov. 3—fans are invited to support the Cougars.  Rockford Register Star
