COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Rockford-area businesses are stepping in as SNAP benefits may not be funded next month if the government does not reopen—Juanito’s Pizza in Beloit will offer a 10-inch cheese pizza for children 12 and under with SNAP or EBT proof starting Nov. 1 while The Noble Cakery and The Nutrition Lounge also launch programs to help families with cake kits and Thanksgiving food boxes. This community support continues until the SNAP funding issue is resolved.  WIFR
  • Rockford faced hard times over the past 50 years with factory closures, rising crime, and lost train service while leaders rebuilt with new arenas and busy downtown shops. Plans like the $613 million reopening of the Belvidere Assembly Plant in 2027 promise a strong comeback—marking a history of crisis and renewal.  WTVO
  • Rockford’s Veterans Dinner will be held on November 1 at Embassy Suites and will honor military heroes with dinner, cocktails, and a tribute from all eras—doors open at 4:30 p.m. and dinner is served at 6:45 p.m. Tickets cost $65 per person.  Rockford Register Star
  • Hoo Haven animal sanctuary in Rockford is hosting its largest open house this Sunday from noon to 3 — a free event with wildlife education, live music, and hands-on animal encounters for families.   • Thousands of Illinois families will lose SNAP benefits starting November 1, and local animal shelters warn that rising financial stress may force more pet surrenders—shelter leaders from Winnebago County Animal Services and the Rockford-based nonprofit Care for Pets said many clients depend on SNAP for both groceries and pet food.  WIFR

  • Justin Carner, owner of Velvet Robot Coffee Lab at 1292 S. Alpine Road, launched a GoFundMe to raise $15,000 as rising costs and a failed move have put his coffee shop at a critical point. He warned that without community support the shop will close soon—donors will receive rewards such as a free drink, a name on the Wall of Love, and an invite to a tasting night.  WIFR
  • Time After Time Resale and Consignment Shoppe will open on Rockford’s east side at 4774 E. State St. (The ribbon cutting is set for Oct. 31 at 1 p.m.) The shop will offer clothing, accessories, shoes and housewares while consignors may bring up to 30 like-new items per visit to earn a 50/50 revenue split.  Rockford Register Star

ECONOMY NEWS

  • On Oct 28, the Greater Rockford Chamber of Commerce unveiled a plan to boost the local economy over the next two years by attracting new businesses and retaining existing ones in Rockford—this roadmap focuses on ready-to-go land sites to ease the setup for companies.  WTVO

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Erikka Coletta from Maple Elementary in Loves Park was named the 2026 Illinois Agriculture in the Classroom Teacher of the Year for her hands-on teaching that links agriculture to everyday learning—she will be honored at the State Farm Bureau meeting in Chicago and represent Illinois at a national conference in Rhode Island next year.  WTVO
  • Thurgood Marshall Elementary in Rockford was ranked third-best among Illinois schools by U.S. News & World Report with 92% math proficiency and 82% reading proficiency—making it the top school in the district. Other district schools, such as Washington Elementary, scored far lower, highlighting the contrast in performance.  WTVO

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Rockford has announced that its Commercial Corridor Property Revitalization Program is now accepting applications for forgivable loans—covering up to 75% of project costs with a maximum of $25,000—for exterior building and ADA upgrades in specific commercial corridors. City officials said applications will be reviewed on a first-come, first-served basis until funds are depleted.  Rockford Sun

HEALTH NEWS

  • Jeanette Towns of Rockford shared her experience with seasonal affective disorder and said that when fall arrived with gray skies, she became very sad and was diagnosed with bipolar disorder before getting treatment that now makes her feel stable — she hopes her story encourages others to seek help. Dr. Christine Manoj of Mercy Health Alpine said that getting more sunlight and talking with a therapist can help manage the illness — advice she believes is important for anyone struggling.  WTVO

  • Rockford Hero Rumble will be a boxing fundraiser on Saturday at Hard Rock Casino Live that pits local firefighters, police, and sheriff's department members in USA Boxing-sanctioned matches to support the Carrie Lynn Children’s Center. Doors will open at 6 p.m. with boxing starting at 7 p.m. — the event is co-produced by Jimmy Goodman and Plus Seven Company.  WTVO
