  • Rockford’s sold-out Mayor’s Hunger Luncheon at Veteran’s Memorial Hall raised nearly $60,000 for nine local food pantries as SNAP benefits are set to expire for almost 70,000 residents come November—officials said the funds are vital amid ongoing government cuts.  WTVO
  • Rockford will host its 13th annual Stroll on State on November 29 with a 5K Dasher Dash at 12 p.m., parade at 2 p.m., tree lighting at 6 p.m., drone show at 6:15 p.m., and fireworks at 8:30 p.m.—city officials say the event will unite residents downtown to celebrate the holiday season.  WIFR

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A Rockford family lost their son and dog when a fire broke out at 2729 Horton Street the morning after relatives gathered on October 23 to remember their late mother, who died on October 19 from cancer — the father survived but was displaced and the cause is under investigation.  WIFR

CULTURE NEWS

  • Local authors Callie Hunter and Tatianna Salisbury will host a grown-up book fair at Bennie’s Cleaners, 126 N. First St.—the event runs from 5 to 10 p.m. on Nov. 1 and features independent bookstores, local authors, and small businesses selling literary-themed goods to rekindle adults’ joy in reading.  WTVO

ECONOMY NEWS

  • JL Clark, a 100-year-old manufacturing staple, faces challenges from an aging workforce that increases workloads and training needs. The Chamber of Commerce created an Economic Development Roadmap and is working with local schools to attract younger talent — a move to support manufacturing that makes up 23% of the local economy.  WTVO

EDUCATION NEWS

  • YMCA Camp Winnebago and the Rotary Club of Rockford will host the 24th Rotary Academy for eighth-grade students in Rockford Public Schools to help them build self-confidence and social-emotional skills for success in high school — over 200 students are expected to participate.  WIFR
  • Highland Community College’s board approved a planning phase on October 15 for a $38M project to transform its Sports Complex into an athletic and learning center. The expansion will improve classes and sports programs while supporting increased enrollment.  Rockford Register Star

  • Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker signed an executive order yesterday declaring an Agricultural Export Crisis after new trade policies hurt farmers. The order directs state agencies to open domestic markets and bolster mental health support—steps aimed at helping farm families face rising production costs and international competition.  WTVO

  • A nurse at Mercyhealth’s Javon Bea Hospital-Riverside has made over 52 Halloween costumes for NICU babies in Rockford as part of her ninth annual project to help families celebrate their little ones' first Halloween.  WIFR
