Good morning, Rockford. Here's your local news at a glance for Saturday, the 1st of November.

COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Local restaurants in Rockford have teamed with the Rock River Valley Food Pantry to hold a food drive that will help families facing SNAP uncertainty. The effort, sparked by The Olympic Tavern’s call on Facebook, has led to overflowing donation bins with pickups scheduled for today—bins will be refilled by the weekend—.  WTVO
  • Rockford’s Veterans Drop-in Center closed on October 6 for reorganization when interim director Valorie Corsolini found the space cluttered and mismanaged, and she said she will clean up the facility and plan a grand re-opening soon at 1539 S 4th St. Volunteer Kathy Easton and former director Eric Willard also raised concerns about outdated nonprofit filings and repair needs + risks to fundraising efforts.  WIFR
  • Local volunteers gathered at Second First Church in Rockford on the last Friday of October to give warm clothing, hygiene packs, and lunch to veterans as part of the annual Top of Illinois Veterans Stand Down event—organizers stress the initiative helps veterans prepare for a cold winter.  WTVO
  • Researchers from the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences and Stony Brook University have reclassified Rockford’s famous fossil Jane as Nanotyrannus lethaeus, a species with bone structures that differ from juvenile T. rex. The Burpee Museum, which has housed Jane since 2002, will host special events at PaleoFest in March 2026—reinforcing its local historical significance.  WIFR

CULTURE NEWS

  • Jane, the dinosaur fossil at Rockford's Burpee Museum of Natural History, may not be a juvenile T-rex but a distinct species called Nanotyrannus lethaeus as a new study shows. Researchers said the finding—backed by a complete tyrannosaur specimen from Montana—will change how scientists view the fossil and its role in understanding dinosaur evolution.  WTVO

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Lawmakers remain divided over ending the government shutdown that risks stopping SNAP benefits for millions — more than 1.9 million people in Illinois depend on food support. Congressman Darin LaHood urged the Senate to use an emergency fund so that federal workers, judges and military members do not lose their benefits as debates over funding continue.  WIFR
  • Illinois lawmakers passed a bill on Friday that allows doctors to prescribe fatal doses to terminally ill patients after they make multiple confirmed requests — the law requires doctors to discuss all care options before administering and now heads to Gov. Pritzker for his signature. Local critics, including the Catholic Diocese of Rockford, warn that the measure may encourage insurers to opt for lower-cost, life-ending medication rather than comprehensive care.  WTVO
