Good morning, Rockford. Here's your local news at a glance for Friday, the 7th of November.

COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Local leaders have stepped in as SNAP benefits face partial withholding—Machesney Park village donated $7,000 to the Helping Hands Pantry while Freeport Township gave $18,000 to the Northern Illinois Food Bank. The donations help meet rising demand, as Helping Hands now serves over 300 families each month.  WTVO
  • The Northern Illinois Food Bank's Neighborhood Market in Rockford saw longer lines on November 6 as fewer than 800 of the expected 1,000 neighbors were able to shop because many new shoppers needed registration + federal workers also joined in seeking help amid the ongoing government shutdown.  Northern Public Radio
  • Barry Paye, president of the Machesney Park Historical Society, held the group's first meeting on Nov 3 to set plans for restoring the old Huskie Barrel drive-thru stand and buying Fred Machesney's 1941 Aeronca Chief for a future museum and visitor center at 716 Russ Ave. The society will later seek village board approval to create a space for local youth fundraisers + community history displays.  Rock River Current
  • Volunteers began setting up a 100-foot tunnel of lights at Sinnissippi Park on November 5 to prepare Rockford’s Festival of Lights, which will later feature 33,000 lights and help fund a fireworks show for America’s 250th birthday in 2026. The nearly month-long effort has required over 200 volunteer hours and continues a long-standing local tradition.  Rock River Current
  • The Boone-Winnebago Regional Office of Education launched a clothing drive on November 6 to collect new or gently used winter clothing for Stateline students—items like coats, hats, gloves, scarves, snow pants and boots—to help them stay warm as they walk or wait for buses in cold weather. Donations are accepted at the Loves Park office at 300 Heart Boulevard from Monday to Friday 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.  WTVO
  • SM and SF club donated $10,000 to Nik’s Wish on Thursday afternoon to fully fund a wish for one 18-24-year-old. Members gathered around the Nik’s Wish lamp—symbolizing the program’s mission—to celebrate the donation and honor Nikolas Ritschel’s legacy.  WIFR

EDUCATION NEWS

  • OSF Saint Anthony Medical Center and OSF Northern Region EMS have launched the Frontline Focus series to train EMS professionals with hands-on case reviews for quicker field decisions. The first session is scheduled for November 11 at The Bricks, 125 Walnut Street in Cherry Valley — featuring trauma, stroke, and heart attack cases — and EMS professionals are encouraged to register.  WIFR
  • A Rockford mother said her two sons were dropped off nearly five miles from home on Monday and Tuesday due to miscommunication between a new bus driver and a substitute teacher. Rockford Public Schools have fixed the error—apologizing for the mistake—and the mother is now considering other transportation options.  WTVO

HEALTH NEWS

  • On November 6, the Swedish American Health Foundation received a $54,000 check from Ron Rudolph and an $18,000 donation from Inspiration of Hope to support the Margaret M. Rudolph Endowment Fund for breast cancer treatment. The fund was established in memory of Maggie Rudolph—a patient who died at 37.  WTVO

SPORTS NEWS

  • Marine Veteran Mark Jones began a 24-hour run with a 40-pound pack at Prairie Fields Sports Park in Belvidere on November 6 to break the current Guinness record of 79.12 miles and support the Oscar Mike Carry the Weight campaign—his professional support team provided food, hydration, and medical aid.
