COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Employees from Tree Care Enterprises installed the official Stroll on State tree at South Main and Elm streets on November 20, and the tree lighting will occur at 6:15 p.m. on November 29 — the tree will remain lit for the holiday season.  Rockford Register Star
  • A Belvidere car dealer has launched a toy drive with Rock House Kids to collect toys for children who might not receive gifts this Christmas. The drive began Wednesday and will run until Dec. 4—collected toys will be given out on Dec. 13 at Rock House Kids’ annual Christmas party.  WTVO

BUSINESS NEWS

  • An Ogle County business in Forreston is winning awards for its cabinets and countertops and impressing customers with modern kitchen designs used in local homes and abroad. The company said it has been in business for 30 years—plans to keep serving the Midwest and international markets while using technology to show new renderings.  WTVO
  • Women from Rockford attended the annual Women in Business Luncheon on Nov. 20 at the Hilton Garden Inn, where leaders shared their business experiences + tips on balancing work and family. Organizers announced plans for next year's event to empower local entrepreneurs further.  WIFR

CULTURE NEWS

  • A new anthology of writings capturing the experiences of Rockford artists was published yesterday and includes personal stories about community struggles and local history — editor Rachel León gathered work from 82 contributors and all royalties will go to the Rockford Area Arts Council — with t-shirt sales benefiting the Family Peace Center.  Northern Public Radio

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Holly Mitchell-Brewer, a certified medical assistant at UW Health, received a $2,000 Andrea Adams, BSN, Memorial Scholarship—an award that will help her pay tuition as she works toward becoming a registered nurse. She said the scholarship eased her financial worries while showing her five-year-old son that hard work can help dreams come true.  WTVO
  • Rockford school leaders and Winnebago officials turned teacher survey data from the Early Development Instrument program into a call for action—UCLA representatives released the data Thursday at the Growing Up Strong event—to help guide future plans for supporting children and families.  WIFR

HEALTH NEWS

  • OSF Saint Anthony celebrated the 30th anniversary of the Patricia D. Pepe Center for Cancer Care on November 20 with a ceremony that included facility tours and refreshments—marking three decades of service. The center—named in 2015 after philanthropist John Pepe’s donation in memory of his late wife—highlighted its ongoing commitment to comprehensive cancer treatment and support.  WTVO
  • Representatives from UICOMR celebrated National Rural Health Day at the campus by sharing how they have battled rural healthcare shortages through panel talks and student stories — the event showed that 70 percent of program graduates now serve rural areas — and it set a strong example for improving care.  WIFR
