- ➤ Rockford’s annual Stroll on State Christmas celebration continues this weekend despite heavy snowfall. The event now ends at 7 p.m.—fireworks start at 6:30 p.m., vendors and Santa visits have moved, and GoRockford advises visitors to dress warmly and use the RMTD shuttle service for extra parking. - ➤ Le-Win’s Christmas Variety Showcase will take place at 3 p.m. on Dec. 14th in the Panther Den and will offer musical acts and holiday treats to help fund a 2026 music trip to New York City. - ➤ Santa is visiting community spots this holiday season—children can meet him at CherryVale Mall from Nov. 14 through Dec. 24, at Riverview Inn and Suites in Rockford on Dec. 7, and at other nearby locations including Williams Tree Farm, Summerfield Farm and Zoo, Freeport's Krape Park, and the Northeast Family YMCA in Loves Park. ACCIDENTS NEWS
- ➤ Marengo Fire and Rescue District said they responded to a call when a man cut his fingers clearing a clog from his snow blower and took him to a Rockford hospital — they advise residents to fully shut off equipment, wait until all moving parts stop, and avoid placing hands near the blades — to prevent further injuries. ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ Multiple local governments declared snow emergencies in northern Illinois ahead of a severe storm that was expected to drop 6″ to 10″ of snow over the weekend—Rockford began its emergency on November 29 with an odd/even parking rule to aid plowing, while forecasts showed snowfall rates nearing 1″ per hour and temperatures falling into the teens with overnight lows in the single digits. This measure was taken to help clear streets as snowfall intensified. WTVO
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Starting January 1, 2026, Illinois will end its 1% statewide grocery tax for most food for home consumption—but hundreds of local governments, including Rockford, will continue a 1% tax to fund essential services, meaning shoppers outside those areas will save on groceries. WTVO
- ➤ Rockford is holding its final yard waste pickup today through Dec. 5—after that, residents may dispose of their yard waste during the Christmas tree collection in early January. Residents must follow guidelines by using compostable paper bags or 32 gallon or smaller cans marked with a visible X and bundling large brush without exceeding a 50 pound load.
