COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Northeast Family YMCA in Loves Park is expanding its fitness center by adding 4,500 sq. feet to its current 4,000 sq. foot space — nearly doubling the facility and introducing 24-hour access — with renovations scheduled to finish by late January.  WIFR
  • Nik’s Wish celebrated the grand opening of its new Rockford headquarters (3430 Longergan Drive) on Tuesday, Dec. 2. The nonprofit, which helps young adults battling cancer, surprised wish recipient Grant Sundstrom (Rockford native) with a private suite to watch a Bulls game with his family.  WIFR
  • Residents in Machesney Park who plan to decorate their homes for the holidays can enter a contest if their lights and decorations are on by the evening of Dec. 12. Trustees will judge the houses during the weekend of Dec. 13 and announce winners at the Village Board Meeting at 6 p.m. on Dec. 15 + each winner receives a Target or Meijer gift card and a $25 gift card to The Parks Ciminos Kitchen.  WIFR
  • Today, WIFR is holding its annual Toys for the Holidays toy drive at Blain’s Farm and Fleet on Riverside in Loves Park from 6 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Bruce Giersch — the drive coordinator — said the event aims to help over 2,000 families in Boone, Stephenson and Winnebago counties have gifts for Christmas.  WIFR
  • The Northeast Family YMCA in Loves Park will double its fitness center by adding 4,000 square feet and new equipment, and will offer 24-hour access for upgraded members by early 2026—improving service and reducing wait times for exercise equipment.  Rock River Current

BUSINESS NEWS

  • The National Labor Relations Board is overseeing an election at Hard Rock Casino Rockford today where about 125 casino workers may vote to join the United Auto Workers—union supporters held multiple rallies to urge improved holiday benefits and pay. Certified results are expected in about seven business days as the effort to give workers a stronger voice continues.  WIFR

CULTURE NEWS

  • Dancers at Rockford Dance Company are putting the final touches on this year’s Nutcracker as they prepare a show with over 100 dancers and a live orchestra for Dec. 6 and Dec. 7 at the Coronado Theater—Artistic Director Lucas Segovia said planning began in April and the cast is working hard with new costumes, a new set and long rehearsal hours.  WIFR
  • The historic Elijah Holt House in Rockford is now eligible to move forward in the nomination process for the National Register of Historic Places after the Illinois Historic Preservation Office approved its eligibility Tuesday night—supporters said the project could secure state and federal tax credits. The Save the Holt House community group will gather historical material and prepare a formal nomination that may take up to nine months to complete—volunteers are welcome to assist with the process.  WIFR
  • Rockford's art scene is facing challenges after some government art grants were cut, and the Rockford Area Arts Council is offering new programs—like roundtables and a civic cultural center project—to support local artists. The council also plans to hold the Rockford Area Arts Awards in March to celebrate local creativity and boost community engagement.  Northern Public Radio

  • New fees added to paint purchases in Illinois are funding a paint recycling program that went into effect December 1 — the program, managed by PaintCare and overseen by the state agency, helps households and businesses recycle leftover paint.  WIFR

  • Financial advisors at Anchor Wealth Management in Rockford say setting a realistic gift budget is key to avoiding overspending this holiday season—Shane Stuart explained that tracking spending now will help plan next year’s budget. This advice comes as many locals face the risk of a debt hangover after the holidays.  WIFR

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Illinois State Rep. John Cabello supported increased domestic natural gas production to help lower fertilizer prices, saying that strict regulations in Springfield and DC raise production costs and pass higher expenses to consumers. He made his remarks in response to a report that linked rising gas prices to increased fertilizer costs.  Rockford Sun
