COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Rockford's Midtown neighborhood has been chosen to receive planning support from R1 through the Livable Communities Initiative to address blight and boost local pride. GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • City Council laid the groundwork for downtown growth by advancing a $45.6 million plan to transform the historic News Tower into loft apartments, retail, and a restaurant.   • Illinois libraries may stock naloxone starting Jan. 1 to help respond quickly to overdoses. The updated standing order signed by Dr. Sameer Vohra will let trained staff administer reversal drugs when needed.  Rockford Register Star

HEALTH NEWS

  • Rockford organizations are offering multiple ways to cope with the holiday blues as increasing stress is seen during the season. They advise joining support groups, attending toy drives, getting outdoors, and practicing self-care (local mental health resources are available) to help residents manage their feelings.  WIFR
  • After responding to two house fires in Rockford this week, American Red Cross volunteers reminded families to heat their homes safely this winter. They advise avoiding unattended space heaters and placing them on stable surfaces (and keeping flammable items at least three feet away) to prevent fires.  WIFR
