COMMUNITY NEWS
- ➤ The Salvation Army Red Kettle Campaign in Winnebago County is seeking donations to meet its $220,000 goal for local families facing hardship. Community members can donate at local kettles or online as the campaign runs until Dec. 24. Rockford Register Star
- ➤ UW Health donated $27K to local food pantries Tuesday to support families facing SNAP delays + one example is the Rock River Valley Food Pantry. WIFR
- ➤ A local family received preliminary approval Tuesday to transform the former Ellida Lodge into Spider on Quinta, a mixed-use event space and office area that will host community gatherings, educational workshops, and more. The plan will be reviewed by the City Council’s Code & Regulation Committee on Jan. 5 (a key step in the project). Rock River Current
BUSINESS NEWS
- ➤ Village Green Nursery, a home and garden center that has served the community for 60 years, will close at 6 p.m. Dec. 23. It was sold to Platt Hill Nursery in October & some employees will continue with the new owners as they prepare a Riverside location for spring. WIFR
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ According to the Illinois State Board of Education, 84 American Indian students were enrolled in Winnebago County districts during the 2024-25 school year — a 4.5% increase from last year. Rockford School District 205 recorded the highest count with 68 students. Rockford Sun
- ➤ Larry Huff, previously superintendent at Elkhart Community Schools, was a candidate to be named Rockford Public Schools’ next superintendent after the board voted Tuesday, Dec. 16, on his selection. If approved, he will begin his term on July 1. Rock River Current
- ➤ Rockford Public Schools hired Larry Huff as the new superintendent on Dec. 16; he aims to return to teaching third grade after his tenure. Huff begins transitional work immediately and will take over on July 1 — as labor negotiations continue. Rock River Current
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ North Park Water recommends homeowners insulate exposed pipes (in basements, garages, and crawl spaces) and let faucets drip to prevent freezing during the upcoming weekend cold snap. Residents are advised to check on neighbors and know their main water shut-off valve. Rockford Register Star
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Rockford City Council will adopt measures in 2026 to boost housing, arts, and job training. Key plans include retrofitting the former Register Star building at 99 E. State St & funding a senior center, sidewalk improvements, and recycling programs. Rockford Register Star
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ On Monday, the Winnebago County department released Illinois’ first report on alcohol use, which showed Rockford ranks high in alcohol-related liver disease and cirrhosis — local experts call for more education and resources to address the trend. WIFR
- ➤ Stepping Stones of Rockford opened a new 10-bedroom group home built from scratch to offer private rooms and common areas with full mental health services. The facility, made possible by a half-cent sales tax, will start welcoming residents in early 2026. WIFR
