COMMUNITY NEWS

  • On Monday afternoon, a memorial service honoring 24 homeless residents who died last year was held at downtown Beattie Park, where local faith leaders and advocates organized the tribute as part of Homeless Persons’ Memorial Day. A Christmas tree display featuring the names is on view at Webbs Norman Center through next week.  WIFR
  • The Illinois Department of Natural Resources invites families to join free self-guided hikes on Jan. 1 at 17 state parks statewide. The program, part of First Day Hike in honor of America’s 250th anniversary, offers photo opportunities and a chance to explore outdoor areas — a perfect new year start.  Rockford Register Star

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Winnebago County school districts enrolled 9,377 Black students for the 2024-25 school year, a 2.3% increase that represents 21.5% of 43,613 total students; Rockford School District 205 recorded the highest enrollment with 8,723 students.  Rockford Sun

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • City officials removed the stained glass window from the former Elks Club shortly before demolition began on Dec. 17 at North Main and Jefferson while building owner Mark McInnis called the move theft and explored legal options.  Rock River Current

HEALTH NEWS

  • Flu cases are rising and local medical professionals advise residents to avoid holiday gatherings if they feel sick & get a flu shot to protect those with weak immune systems. They also recommend seeking care if symptoms persist for more than three days.  WIFR
  • Rockford Urban Ministries hosted its fourth annual Blue Christmas service the day after the winter solstice to honor loved ones lost to opioid addiction. Reverend Violet Johnicker led a candle lighting remembrance - local groups provided Narcan education as community members gathered for reflection.  WIFR
  • Illinois has extended its health insurance enrollment to Dec. 31 so residents can sign up for coverage beginning Jan. 1. Free assistance and plan options are available through GetCoveredIllinois.gov.  Rockford Register Star
  • At Mercyhealth Javon Bea Hospital-Riverside, NICU nurse JoAnn Gorsline has made Christmas costumes for babies to help families feel holiday cheer — a festive touch that brings warmth during hospital stays.  WIFR
