COMMUNITY NEWS

  • YWCA Northwestern Illinois will host its third One Table event on Saturday, August 23 from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. at the corner of Market and Water Streets—Chef Paul Sletten of Abreo will curate a multi-course meal to boost advocacy for women and families.  WIFR

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Multiple flights originally set for Chicago Midway and O’Hare have been diverted to Rockford due to severe thunderstorms – FlightAware reported delays at both airports.  WIFR

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Rockford residents paid roughly $5.2 million in sales taxes during June, placing the city as the eighth highest payer per municipality in Illinois—tax records show municipal sales tax made up the largest share. The city ranked ninth the previous month when just over $5 million was collected.  Rockford Sun

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The city's Historic Preservation Commission urged aldermen to pause demolishing the 113-year-old Elks Lodge No. 64 at 210 W. Jefferson St. until preservation expert Mary Brush evaluates its condition. Building owner Mark McInnis plans a national online auction Sept. 15-17 and said his goal is to attract redevelopment bids—he hopes investors will help save the historic property.  Rock River Current

SPORTS NEWS

  • Rockford's Clarence Hicks Sports Complex will open on Aug. 30 with new youth sports facilities — a stadium, an eight-lane track, and Chicago Bears turf for warm-ups. Organizers say the outdoor event was rescheduled after unpredictable weather delayed the infrastructure setup.  Rockford Register Star
